Harold Update
As those of you who read Angela's LJ first already know, after spending a weekend trying every conceivable gambit to convince Harold to take a plane back to Dallas, this morning he's wound up on a bus... but only as far as Medford, where he's bound and determined to pick up his car and drive BACK to our house, so he can load up his possessions before driving off back to Dallas.

*OY*

We're trying to weigh the benefits and risks of asking the Medford police to trail him and pick him up again when he starts driving dangerously, or letting him make his way to Albany before trying anything else.

We haven't had physical possession of the car thus far, so we couldn't have implemented any of the "do something evil to the car to stop it from working" ideas people have sent in, even if we'd wanted to.  [At this point, it's clear that short of physically STEALING his car, he would just call a car repair place, pay for any damages, and keep right on going.  He is DETERMINED to keep driving.]

At this point, we are both SO exhausted, we're just about ready to load up his car when he turns up again, and send him on his way.  So far as we know, he hasn't killed anyone YET.  Maybe he'll make it back to Dallas in one piece.  Maybe he's not QUITE as bad on the road as we all think.

*SIGH*  Wish I could believe that.

We appreciate all of the good thoughts, and after a desperately-needed 24-hour break from Harold, we'll start brainstorming again when he turns up, and see if we can find any way to convince the man to voluntarily step into an airplane...

OK, one more suggestion, and then I'm going to say "Harold's a grownup, and if this is how he wants to kill himself, you can't stop him.":

Could you persuade him to fly back to Texas and hire somone else to deliver the car to him in Texas? There are a lot of people who do that kind of thing, and you could probably track one down via Craigslist. Hey, if you're really lucky, they might even steal the car....

Otherwise: "Harold's a grownup ..."

That's exactly what we've been pushing for. We've found that we can get his car shipped, on a car carrier, TO HIS DOOR, for $800. For Harold, that's chump change.

Except the REASON he has so much money is that he's a miser, and paying $800 (or letting *US* pay $800) to ship his car is simply out of the question...

Even if it were free, though, the fact is that he just won't admit defeat. He set out to take a driving trip, and by gum, he's going to finish it. He's even making noises about taking additional (shorter) trips next year -- little does he know that we've arranged for the Texas DMV to require a retest, and they WILL take away his license if he fails.

Of course, even THAT won't necessarily stop him from driving... but he'll spend alot more time in jail if he does...

Angela's already composing a letter to Peter DeFazio asking for a national law that allows ANY state DMV to retest, and if need be, take away the license, of an out-of-state driver -- if the driver has been caught driving recklessly by ANY state's police [N] number of times within [X] months...
