Strings and sailing wax...
  • So I went ahead and went nuts, and upgraded my brand-new 24-inch monitor to the even brander-new 30-inch model that I should have simply bought in the first place.

[As of today, my 24-incher has been brought to work. Not only does it make work easier, but it reduces the whiplash feeling when I go back and forth from the 30-incher at home...] :)

30 inches man. Whoa. Now THAT is real estate. It's amazing how immersive games can be, when the game fills your entire field of vision. :)

  • Speaking of gaming, I've finished playing through the bits of Orange Box that interested me -- Portal was a blast (the ending song is addictive enough to download and listen to as an MP3), and the Half Life 2 episodes were... more of Half Life 2. (Which I thoroughly enjoy.) I'll likely replay these several more times... :)

And finally... FINALLY... Angela and I have started playing NeverWinter Nights 2. The game we bought nearly two years ago, and flat-out couldn't play on my old beastie. So far, it's working like a dream... though I am still struggling to learn how to use the "game camera" interface smoothly...

  • The doggie is at the vet today, getting some broken rear teeth either filed or removed. We haven't the faintest clue how she managed to do THAT... but we're good doggie parents, and want to make sure she's properly taken care of. (She hasn't been suffering -- we didn't have any clue that she had teeth problems until her regular vet checkup.)

It suddenly occurs to me that "Strings and Wailing Sax" would be a great name for a Jazz and/or Blues group... :)

Portal is such a beautifully crafted game - hint at how games ought to be in the future. First thing I did upon beating it was sit down and work out the ending song on piano :)

Portal is such a joy! So original. So refreshing. I hadn't played a game that good for years... then I played BioShock, which isn't as original but is equally good (and longer!).

The Half-Life 2 series is wonderful too and inspiring for me as a game designer. Excellent level design, good story telling, and characters I actually care about a bit.

30 inches! Wow! That's almost twice the size of my display. Isn't it a bit intimidating? I'd be afraid my computer might eat me! ;-)

I originally chose the 24-inch, because 30 seemed like overkill.

And when I first set it up, I thought I'd chosen correctly -- but over the next week or two, I went from "wow that's huge" to "hmmm, I shoulda gotten bigger".

So I went for it -- and my first thought on installing the 30 was "Dammit, that's TOO BIG! I made the right choice the first time!" And that feeling lasted maybe a couple of days...

Now I'm looking at my 30 and going, "Meh. Could be bigger..." ;)

But Seriously... 30 inches is *NICE*... And it's amazing how fast you can get comfortable with it... :)

Sure, tease the workmates with the biggest monitor in the office. :)

I've gotta see the 30 inches monitor....I may need to go there myself now to keep up. :)

PS - Isn't it "sealing" wax? (as in the stuff they seal letter with)

Goddamn it, I hate it when I'm retarded. It is, of course, supposed to be "sealing wax". Way for Peter, Paul and Mary to retroactively ruin my whole pun idea. :(

Yeah, you need to drop by. 30 inches is crazy great. :)
