Iron Rations...
We finally got to see Iron Man yesterday (yay holidays!), and it was all I'd hoped for:
  • A well told origin story.
  • Not too cartoony/silly.
  • Not trying to pack too much wowie-zowie into a two hour movie.
  • True to the original material.
All in all, an excellent movie.  Yay Marvel!  I am looking forward to the new Hulk (a complete do-over, with nods to the TV series and utterly ignoring the previous movie)...

After the movie, Angela and I "discovered" a new mexican food place, and were highly impressed: Angelica's.  It doesn't look like much on the outside, but the food is good, and FRESH.  The flour tortillas are homemade, and LOVELY.  (We'll try the corn next time!)  You get a bean dip in addition to your salsa at the start of the meal, which was yummy and appreciated.

Angela loved her garlic shrimp -- and the fajitas had a decent meat/veggie ratio, which always appeals to me.  :)

Angela's Cuervo Gold magarita was the best she's ever had, bar none... and then there was the flan.

Oh.  My.  God.  The flan.

I've had my share of custard/flan in my day, and always loved it.  But triple the flavor and texture of the next-best flan, and you still won't be in the same neighborhood as this one.

Seriously, I've never considered trying to get flan "to go" -- but I'm wondering if we could get a dozen of these into our fridge... and replace them each week.  I could LIVE off of this stuff...

Needless to say, we'll be going back.  Frequently.  :)

Ooh. Thanks for the recommendation. I'm getting really bored with the restaurants in Albany, but I'm usually too lazy to drive to Corvallis (where I keep hearing about kick-ass new restaurants down by the waterfront). This sounds like worth checking out.

Flaaaaaaaan!!

I've always mildly liked flan; no biggie; whatever. But several months ago I had some flan at a little Mexican place in LA's Farmer's Market called ¡Lotería!, and IT ROCKED SO AMAZINGLY that I was just enthralled! I had to ask the guy who ran the place what was it that made it so special. "Goat caramel", he said, a.k.a. "cajeta". Ohhhh, wow! I wonder if that's what you ran into?

Re: Flaaaaaaaan!!

The caramel sauce on this flan is yummy, but very light; just a small compliment to the overall experience. It's the custard itself that simply blows the mind.

This custard has *WEIGHT*. You can seriously taste the egg...

Normal custard is Bruce Banner. This custard is THAT custard pissed off. :)

I'll have to ask around about goat caramel though... :)

I don't even like Mexican food...

...but this place sounds great! Marina & Andy took me there years ago when it was Tarasco's, and it sounds like the food is still amazing. Their website says it's run by the Baez family; they have a couple restaurants in Salem (Los Baez) that are DELICIOUS, and again, I don't like Mexican food! :)
