Is Ted Koppel Insane?
In his column in the NY Times Monday (paid subscription needed for link), Ted Koppel says, "There is something terribly seductive about the notion of a mercenary army."  He argues that mercenaries, making "more than [they] could ever make in the direct service of Uncle Sam, might relieve us of an array of current political pressures."  He then suggests the "inevitable next step — a defensive military force paid for directly by the corporations that would most benefit from its protection".

Am I the only one getting chills from this?

What happens to government accountability and responsibility, when the government pays private contractors to do the dirty work?

What happens when corporations -- motivated solely by profit for their shareholders -- have military forces of their own?

Am I the only person who's ever seen Robocop?

*SHUDDER*

If mercenaries make so much more than our soldiers, here's a wild and wacky thought, why not simply pay soldiers what they're worth?

And if our current foreign policy choices lead to an "array of current political pressures", then GOOD!  There *SHOULD* be consequences for choosing war over diplomacy...
