The Dearly Departed...
Well, Harold got his car, found his way back to our place, and after staying two more nights, he's gone again.

In his car.

We spent a week trying to convince him to fly home -- we'd pay the airfare AND ship the car back to him. But no, he wants to drive and nothing's gonna stop him.

If we'd disabled his car (as several people suggested), he'd have just stayed longer, gotten it fixed, and THEN driven home.

If we'd STOLEN his car, he'd have just stayed longer, filed a thousand police reports, bought another car and THEN driven home.

If we'd called the police and had them trail him and pick him up the next time he nearly causes an accident, they'd just tow his car, make him spend the night, and then he'd be free to pay the towing charge and be back on the road the next day.

There's just no way to STOP him until he causes a wreck, or gets home to Texas. (And we've already seen to it that the Texas DMV will require him to be retested...)

As it is, Harold is actually planning on stopping in Medford again and delivering a letter he wrote to a county official, complaining that the fireman who witnessed him driving erratically was "maliciously lying" and demanding compensation for the money he was forced to spend on the towing company, motel, and bus fare to go back down there and pick up his car.

Yes. The man who has been pulled over THREE TIMES in the past couple of months for reckless driving, and LOCKED UP for over a month during that time, is now going to go OUT OF HIS WAY to call attention to his driving (and his sanity) in front of the very people who could easily take away his car and lock him up yet again.

Assuming he DOESN'T get detained again, God help anyone driving between Albany Oregon and Dallas Texas for the next two weeks...

We really tried... not that that will make us feel any better if he DOES cause anyone to be hurt or killed...

It sounds as if, as you say, you did everything you could. In fact, it has sounded as if you went above and beyond.

You will of course be appalled and saddened if Harold's driving injures anyone. As, I expect, will Harold should he survive it. But I hope you don't mean that you will feel any personal responsibility. I don't see how anyone kind of saneish could think you were at all responsible.

It's not so much of feeling responsible, because we truly did all we could think of -- including having his friends try to convince him to listen to us. We are COMPLETELY exhausted from dealing with the situation. But if he DOES manage to kill someone we'll still feel terrible by proxy -- if that makes sense. More a matter of "we knew this was going to happen and there was nothing we could do to stop it" kind of feeling. While he is nearly 90 and has lived a rich full life, the person he might kill probably hasn't. It's just a very frustrating situation.

Anything I can do on this end? Short of stalking him and calling in an anonymous tip?

Hey, if you're really bored and feel like stalking him... ;)

I could arrange for you to "accidentally" meet him and tell him scary stories about how the police these days are looking to make trouble for older drivers... he'd believe that.

You might even like him -- he's sorta "Wilford Brimley meets Ebenezer Scrooge". :)

But seriously, that's OK. By the time he's back in Dallas, he'll likely be harmless enough. He knows the roads there -- and he should be getting his license revoked before too long anyway...

Okay, having just read all the posts about Harold's driving, and since we now LIVE in Dallas - what kind of car does he drive?? So we can go the other way quickly if we spot it ...

(Hey Reed - long time no talk - it's Karen, Unkaphaed's friend from high school/college/life after college ...)

Hi there! (Do you have a photo somewhere online? I *THINK* I might remember you, but not sure -- I have a LOUSY memory...)

I don't want to post TOO much identifying info about Harold online, but if you see a beat-up older white Ford Escort weaving down the road, with a rumpled-looking version of Wilford Brimley (the Quaker Oats guy) behind the wheel, that's probably him. :)

I've actually ridden in the car with him as he CENTERED the car on the white striped line...
