Rove resigns!!!
Just thought I'd point out a small cultural difference that became apparent to me when reading two CNN articles this morning.

Compare and contrast:
Toy Company CEO Kills Self

BEIJING, China (AP) -- The head of a Chinese manufacturing company accused of shipping hundreds of thousands of lead-tainted toys later recalled in the United States has committed suicide, a state-run newspaper said Monday.

Zhang Shuhong, who co-owned Lee Der Industrial Company, killed himself at a warehouse over the weekend, days after China announced it had temporarily banned exports by the company, the Southern Metropolis Daily said.

Lee Der made 967,000 toys recalled earlier this month by Mattel Inc. because they were made with paint containing excessive amounts of lead. The plastic preschool toys, sold under the Fisher-Price brand in the U.S., included the popular Big Bird, Elmo, Dora and Diego characters.

It was among the largest recalls in recent months involving Chinese products, which have come under fire for globally for containing potentially dangerous high levels of chemicals and toxins.

The Southern Metropolis Daily said that a supplier, Zhang's best friend, sold Lee Der the contaminated paint.

"The boss and the company were harmed by the paint supplier, the closest friend of our boss," a manager surnamed Liu was quoted as saying.

Liu said Zhang hung himself on Saturday, according to the report. It is common for disgraced officials to commit suicide in China.
Emotional Rove Announces "Next Chapter"

WASHINGTON (CNN) -- An emotional Karl Rove characterized his tenure in the White House as a "witness to history" as he announced his resignation as President Bush's senior political adviser at the end of this month.

"It seems the right time to start thinking about the next chapter in our family's life," Rove said, his voice breaking. "It's not been an easy decision."

Speaking to reporters outside the White House with Bush at his side, Rove said discussions about his departure began last summer. "It always seemed there was a better time to leave, somewhere out there in the future. But now is the time."

He told Bush he would be "your fierce and committed advocate on the outside."

Bush said Rove "is movin' on down the road," and added, "I'll be on the road behind you here in a little bit."

The two men have known each other for decades. Rove said they have been friends for 34 years.

Rove said earlier Monday that his resignation as was not forced and that he plans to spend his post-White House career writing a book and teaching.

Perhaps Bush's most powerful White House aide, Rove submitted his resignation to Bush on Friday, he told CNN's Suzanne Malveaux in an e-mail.

When asked for his reaction to those who say he's being "run out of town," Rove responded, "That sounds like the rooster claiming to have called up the sun."

I wouldn't want to expand this into a full comparison of Chinese and American cultures... but down in a dark corner of my psyche, I *DO* sometimes find myself wishing that our disgraced political and business leaders would borrow a page from their Chinese counterparts...

[Rove waits for Congress to go on vacation, then skips out of Dodge.  Wouldn't surprise me if he had a sudden urge to visit a country without any extradition treaties for the next year or two...]
