The New Car Blues... - Unbeliever's Land

The New Car Blues...
We are now the proud owners of a Camry hybrid!

...and now the nervousness sets in.

It's kinda like my recent computer acquisition -- it's too good, too modern, too new.

Come to think of it, the learning curves for working in Vista and driving a hybrid seem similar.  You've been driving/computing for YEARS, you're totally comfortable with your current car/computer, and then suddenly you upgrade to Something New -- and Nothing's The Same Anymore.

Nothing's in the same place.  Even the BASICS are different.  How the hell do you get used to a car where the "key" is a small electronic box on a keychain that NEVER LEAVES YOUR POCKET?  The car just "sees" the key nearby and lets you open the door and push a button to start driving.

Then there's the nav system.  This car actually knows where it is, and can show you on a map, in real time!  It knows where all the restaurants, gas stations, motels, etc are -- including address and phone number.  And it connects to your cell phone via bluetooth, so you can call them with the touch of a button.

And a moon roof!  For the love of god, we have a moon roof.  And the four-disc CD changer plays MP3s.  And... and... and...

I'm mostly OK with Vista at this point (although -- like the hybrid -- it's always trying to be a little too smart for it's own good).  And I imagine, in a week or so, I'll be driving this car like I've never driven anything else.

But... for now... it's still a tad intimidating...

(Oh, and hello again, car payments.  I suspect our days of feeling "insanely wealthy" may be about to come to a close...)

I seriously thought about a personalized plate -- and we may switch to one later. But for now, it'll be a random Crater-Lake-style plate...

OH -- you mean what it says NOW. It says "John & Phil WHO?" -- the standard generic plate for John & Phil Toyota in Corvallis, where we bought it.

"John & Phil WHO." (The long-time marketing catch-phrase for the local Toyota dealer, John & Phil's.)
