A true tragedy... - Unbeliever's Land
...The continuing chronicles...
A true tragedy...
Angela and I were coming back from our CSS meeting in Corvallis a few days ago, and were in the mood for some good food... so we pulled up in front of our favorite restaurant... and found a For Rent sign up.

Shawn's On First is out of business...  :(

Shawn (never did get his last name) was a cook at the Buzzsaw, back when THAT was one of the best restaurants in Albany.  Angela and I had our post-wedding party at Buzzsaw...

Then the owners of Buzzsaw shut it down... and without Shawn, the restaurant that tried to take it's place failed miserably and died quickly.

Then, a year and a half ago or so, Shawn pulled together some capital and opened up his OWN restaurant -- with the best food in Albany, bar none.  Angela and I tried to frequent it as much as possible...  the waitresses were VERY friendly, and got to know us by name (and by our usual orders).  Shawn himself would come out on occasion, and got to know us as well.  Angela and I started to feel like minor celebrities... :)

We introduced our friends and relatives to Shawn's -- everybody agreed it was excellent.

But in the end, he just couldn't stir up enough business -- especially when Szabo's opened up just down the street.  Which is even more tragic -- because as much as Angela and I have loved Newport's Szabo's, their second restaurant here in Albany just doesn't compare.  Across the board, Albany Szabo's is a pale imitation at best -- but it succeeded in stealing just enough business to shut Shawn's down.

And that's just a bloody tragedy... :(

Ah, I feel for you, Reed. June and I have a favorite restaurant that has by far the tastiest food we've ever eaten. We love it so much, we eat there every week or two. It's practically a part of our relationship. We would be really sad if it closed.

I hate it when good restaurants close.
